Hello everyone.
I am hoping that everyone reads this below. It has come out lately that the company Sonos has completely rewritten their app for use with the Sonos wireless speakers. For the last 15 years or so, I have been using the Sonos speaker system in my house. I have spent over $3000 on this system and have been extremely happy with it. First, because the way in which they work, second, in the way in which they sound, and third, in the accessibility of their app. Just recently Jonathan Mosen has published an article about this new app that they are releasing and how it is completely inaccessible to the blind and visually impaired who use screen readers on their smart phone. If they do not fix this, it will be completely unusable for blind users like myself and it will make my $3000 speaker system completely worthless. Jonathan has reached out many times to the CEO to address this concern only to be completely ignored without a single response. Today, Sonos has released this completely inaccessible app now on the app store. If you are a blind user, and you choose to update to this app, you are going to be dead in the water. I am reposting Jonathan’s article below so everyone can read what to do about this at least for the time being. I am also posting below the direct email address to the CEO. I encourage everyone that has a dog in this hunt to email this CEO and demand that this app be fixed to comply with the ADA standards and make their new app accessible. Please make sure that he knows that you will be sharing this info and the blind community will be boycotting Sonos until this is fixed. There is no excuse for this behavior and this CEO and company needs to be held accountable. If you are a Sonos user, do not, I repeat, do not, update your app to the latest version of the Sonos app that was released today. Also, do not purchase any new Sonos speakers until this has been fixed. You will be very sorry if you do as you will find that you cannot use them. Jonathan will share with you what you need to do to make sure your app and firmware on your speakers do not update automatically. Please read below.

Please share this info with all your friends, post to your social media, and anywhere you can post and share this to get the word out to other visually impaired Sonos users. Please be sure and include the email addresses so everyone can flood his email box with requests to make this app accessible. It is only this way, that will get them to take action and do something about this. I am going to put some sample text below as to what you might say in your email. Please do not copy this word for word as it is just a guideline and we don’t what everyone’s email to sound and look exactly the same. It will have the opposite affect if that happens..
Dear Mr. Spence. I am currently a Sonos user and have been now for many years. I have spent lots of money purchasing multiple Sonos speakers as they sound great and are of great use to me in my home. I am also visually impaired and use a voice screen reader on my smart phone. One thing that I always loved about Sonos is their dedication to make sure their app was accessible to the blind and visually impaired. I have recently learned that the recent release of your Sonos app is completely unusable and inaccessible for the visually impaired community. I am referring to the community of blind users that use a screen reader to convert text to speech in order to allow us to interact with the app and take advantage of all the functions and features like someone with vision. I am very concerned about this as I have spent a lot of money on your speaker system that is completely useless to me as a blind user with this new app update. This is completely unacceptable! As blind people, we face many obstacles every day in a world that is more, and more, marketed to the sighted community. It was a small bright spot that the Sonos app, up until now, was accessible to the blind and visually impaired. Music and audio is one of the most important things in a blind persons world because we use our ears, and not our eyes. I am asking you as a concerned blind Sonos customer to please address this issue. I have and will be sharing this info with the blind community to make them aware of the current problem with your new app. I would hope that a company that wants to be inclusive, like Sonos, will do what is right and make this new app like your old one, and be completely accessible to the blind and visually impaired. Please know that There have been multiple media and news outlets that have been made aware of this situation, so please understand that the blind community will not be ignored regarding this. Here is hoping for a quick resolution to this problem from you and your company. Sincerely, Brent Harbolt
